Competitiveness Compass

The Competitiveness Compass is a strategic monitoring tool developed by the European Commission to assess the EU’s progress toward a resilient, competitive and decarbonised economy. It benchmarks performance across key dimensions such as clean energy deployment, industrial competitiveness, supply chain resilience and innovation capacity.

The first Competitive Decarbonisation and Resilience Compass was published in March 2024, setting out indicators and targets to guide investment, regulatory focus and policy coherence as part of the Green Deal Industrial Plan and the EU’s 2040 climate targets.

Why it matters for energy and Europex:

The Competitive Compass helps shape the long-term policy environment for electricity and gas markets, particularly in areas like infrastructure investment, clean tech deployment and carbon pricing. It reinforces the role of well-functioning energy markets and exchanges in achieving decarbonisation at least cost, while supporting competitiveness and security of supply—core priorities for Europex and its members.
