Natural Gas Directive

Directive 2009/73/EC concerning common rules for the internal market in natural gas addresses, among other topics, unbundling of energy supply and generation from transmission. It also promotes non-discriminatory network access and aims to strengthen the independence of regulators.

This act has been changed. Current consolidated version: 23/06/2022.

In November 2017, the Commission adopted a legislative proposal for a targeted revision of the 2009 Natural Gas Directive COM (2017/0660 final), which resulted in Directive (EU) 2019/692 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 April 2019 amending Directive 2009/73/EC concerning common rules for the internal market in natural gas.

The latest revision of the third energy package for gas, Directive 2009/73/EC, occurred as part of the European Green Deal, with the legislative proposal being adopted on December 15, 2021. This revision resulted in the Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Markets Package. The legislative proposal for this revision and the foreseen unbundling rules affected the transition to a hydrogen-based gas economy.
