The European Climate Law enshrines into law the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality objective and the intermediate 2030 target of at least 55% net GHG reduction. It provides a legal framework for long-term climate governance. The text was adopted in June 2021.
It sets out rules on:
- Binding climate neutrality by 2050.
- Intermediate 2030 GHG reduction target (at least 55% net).
- Obligation for consistency across all EU legislative proposals.
- Role of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change.
- Regular review and adjustment mechanisms.
